Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan is seeking to limit the public’s ability to inquire about government records stored on personal email accounts, a move he says will preserve the privacy of officials across the state.

In a case that could have broad implications for government transparency in Vermont, Donovan is working to shield his predecessor, former Attorney General William Sorrell, from having to answer questions under oath in a public records lawsuit…

The organization that brought the lawsuit, Energy and Environment Legal Institute, wants to press Sorrell and three assistant attorneys general over whether Sorrell conducted government business on a personal Gmail account.
