Keystone XL proponents yesterday seized on newly released emails between U.S. EPA and the Sierra Club to accuse the agency of improper collusion with green activists organizing against the oil sands crude pipeline.
The emails, released in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by attorney Chris Horner, show then-Sierra Club Washington representative Lena Moffitt sharing documents and pressing her anti-KXL case with several EPA staffers. One of Moffitt’s messages relays a self-sacrifice metaphor used by then-EPA Associate Administrator for Policy Michael Goo to describe degrees of potential involvement in the incendiary pipeline debate.
“I know this is a tough issue, but please do let me know if I can be helpful in any way — particularly in further identifying those opportunities for EPA to engage that don’t involve ‘throwing your body across the tracks,’ as Michael put it,” Moffitt wrote in a September 2011 email to Goo and EPA colleagues Arvin Ganesan and Alex Barron.
