At least seven state attorneys general signed an agreement earlier this year to block public access to their internal communications about potential investigations into ExxonMobil’s record on climate change.

The AGs’ pact, known as a “common interest agreement,” stems from a daylong March 29 conference they attended that was hosted by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and centered on “aggressively protecting and building upon the recent progress the United States has made in combating climate change.”

At least one state AG’s office recently cited the agreement in denying a request for records related to the Exxon investigation from the Energy & Environment Legal Institute and the Free Market Environmental Law Clinic, a pair of right-leaning groups that obtained a draft version of the pact.
