The Virginia Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the emails of a former University of Virginia climate scientist are exempt from disclosure under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

The justices also upheld a circuit court decision requiring the American Tradition Institute to pay for the university’s costs in searching through documents to determine what was exempt from disclosure.

The ruling drew applause from academics, disappointment from the institute and some concern from open-government advocates.
